Cracked tooth syndrome , is a common cause for dental pain. Patients experience pain upon chewing or with temperature. The dentist will usually check the tooth by having the patient bite on a bite stick or with air. The pain will go away once the stimulant is gone. The dentist prepare the tooth for a crown to help splint the tooth together and keep it from fracturing. If we catch it early, we normally do not need to perform tooth canal therapy. If you are experiencing dental pain, get into the dentist as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more chance of irreversible nerve damage in the tooth that would necessitate root canal therapy.

Dentists have been doing bridges for many decades. They have filled the spaces, but they have also had to carve down the adjacent teeth to do so. The dental patient then has to floss and clean around and under the bridge. If the dental patient has enough bone for a dental implant it is clearly the best option. The dental patient can maintain the implant tooth like he would a normal tooth. The adjacent teeth also remain intact. If I had the choice between a implant and a bridge, I would pick the implant.

We had a discussion at the dental office today about cosmetic dentistry. The question that was posed was to decide what procedure we considered to be the "most" cosmetic. Some of the staff said veneers, some said teeth whitening, but I stated that dentures were possibly the highest form of cosmetic dentistry. Think about it, after severe decay, dental infection, gum disease, trauma,......fabricating a denture gives the dental patient a whole new smile! So I still contend that dentistry's ultimate form of cosmetic dentistry may be dentures..........and maybe some dental implants to hold them in!
