Sedation dentistry, as the name implies, is a technique used by a trained dentist to provide a relaxing and anxiety-free experience for people receiving dental treatment. A major benefit to the sedation technique is that people often feel the procedure lasts only a few minutes when in fact, it might have taken hours to perform. Most people rarely feel any discomfort after the procedure.

Many people avoid visiting the dentist because of the common dental phobia. Avoiding regular dental treatment often results in neglect of oral health and appearance, up to and beyond the point when drastic measures become necessary. Sedation dentistry addresses this phobia, allowing people to undergo dental work while avoiding this common apprehension. Additionally, sedation dentistry is such that complex dental procedures normally requiring numerous visits can often be performed in just one or two sittings. Many dentists now offer sedation dentistry; however, the level of experience among dentists in sedation dentistry varies.

What is Sedation?

Sedation is a technique that aims to pharmacologically alter your central nervous system (CNS) to produce an overall calm and relaxed (sedated) sensation. Sedative drugs (tranquillizers, depressants, sleeping pills, anxiolytics, etc.) are used to induce sedation and can be administered in a variety of ways.

In the past, IV sedation was predominantly used to produce a sedated effect in dentistry. IV sedation is both safe and effective when administered by a trained professional. Today, there are alternatives available for sedation dentistry patients. Inhalation and oral sedation offer a "no needle" approach that many patients findSedation dentistry helps to relieve anxiety of nervous patients more accommodating than the traditional IV method.

Seeking the advice of a dentist experienced in sedation dentistry, rather than foregoing treatment because of fear and potential pain, gives people the opportunity to undergo critical procedures that they would have otherwise avoided.

Sleep Dentistry or Sedation Dentistry?

Although you are kept awake throughout the sedation process, sedation dentistry has occasionally been dubbed as sleep dentistry. However, the term sleep dentistry is misleading. In actual fact, you do not sleep during the procedure, but because of the sedation effect produced by the medication, you may feel sleepy. If complex medical problems exist that prohibit you from receiving sedation, you may be given a different medication to induce a deeper type of sleep during the dental procedure. This is called general anesthesia, not sedation dentistry.

For all your sedation and sleep dentistry needs, visit Comfort Dental of Anderson today!

At Comfort Dental of Anderson, we offer sedation services for many different situations. The majority of our patients select oral sedation, however, a growing number of patients are selecting IV Sedation or even General Anesthesia, both offered by an anesthesiologist. The anesthesiologist comes into the office on an as-needed basis. If a patient requests IV or General Anesthesia, then the doctor is contacted. The doctor will need a complete medical history as well as a consultation with your primary care physician if you have a complicated medical history. IV Sedation is an excellent choice for dental procedures such as dental implants, wisdom teeth removal, cosmetic dentistry and any comprehensive dental surgery. Sedation dentistry makes going to the dental office for dental care a piece of cake! Our morning patient was concerned about having his wisdom teeth removed. The patient thought he would be too nervous to sit through the dental surgery appointment. I recommended sedation dentistry for his concerns. The dental patient was given a single pill to place under his tongue. The tasteless medicine soon dissolved and the patient was prepared for his dental surgery appointment. He was able to relax and tolerated the dental care very well. After the removal of the wisdom teeth, the patient asked when we would start the dental procedure! He didn't realize that we were already done! Sedation dental care makes going to the dentist a whole lot easier!

Patients can be sedated for dental care. There are broken-down smiles getting worse all because fear of the dentist. But once they get comfortable with sedation dentistry they are on there way to a healthy smile.

Using Halcion is my favorite type of dental sedation. I have the patient arrive at the dental office one hour before his/her dental care appointment. We then administer one halcion pill and to ensure safety, we place the patient on a monitor called a pulse oximeter which measure heart rate, blood oxygen levels and blood pressure. Within a half hour the patient starts to understand why we call it sedation dentistry. They become very relaxed and some people even fall asleep during the dental care. The greatest benefit from this drug is most patients do not remember anything about the dental care or even the dental office itself.

For the dentophobic, sedation dentistry is the way to go. Check out www.sedationdocs.com.

Dental Implants replace lost or missing teeth. Dental Implants are precision-crafted pieces of titanium that are surgically placed beneath the gums to fuse to the jawbone. Dental Implants in effect are artificial tooth roots, to which a new tooth is attached. At Comfort Dental of Anderson, we use Dental Implants to replace one or more missing teeth, to support non-removable permanent bridges for multiple teeth, or to better support a full or partial denture. Dental Implants can be placed with the patient awake however, many patients prefer to have the Dental surgery done with sedation dentistry. In general, patients are amazed the day after the leave the dentist office there is little or no pain. Like natural teeth, Dental Implants require normal dental care (brushing flossing) and regular visits the your dental office or dental clinic.

Many patients are asking about the new ultra thin cosmetic dental veneers. We have been placing these thin veneers for about 18 months. This procedure lends itself to very conservative cosmetic dental care. Patients at our dental practice are very happy with the results! Many of the patients will start the process with cosmetic teeth whitening to get the rest of the teeth to a lighter shade that we can then match the new cosmetic dental veneers to. Occasionally, patients will request sedation dentistry for the procedure, but it is not required. The cosmetic procedure is very uninvasive and more times than not, doesn't even reqire dental numbing! Cosmetic dental veneers can also be placed in conjunction with dental implants or any other family dental procedures.

I have recently been asked if it is safe to have all 4 wisdom teeth out at the same time. Most people prefer to have all 4 wisdom teeth removed at the same appointment. The risk of adverse side effects, like dry socket, obviously goes up with multiple extractions, however, it is generally very safe to have all wisdom teeth removed at the same setting. Usually the adverse side effects can be reduced or eliminated completely just by following the post operative instructions given at the appointment. Most of my patients choose to have all 4 wisdom teeth removed at the same time with the aid of sedation dentistry.

A visit to the dental office can yield some very valuable information. Go visit many dental clinics or dental offices to see what each has to offer. Does the dentist do sedation dentistry? Does the dentist offer wisdom teeth removal? Is the practice focused on cosmetic dentistry or dental implants? It is important to feel comfortable at a dental office with the cleanliness of the facility. If you are not happy and comfortable, keep searching until you find the family dentst that is right for you!

Dental care can be very nerve racking for most patients. Dr. Stratman usually suggests that patients consider the various forms of sedation for their dental care. Forms of sedation dentistry offered at Comfort Dental of Anderson include laughing gas, oral sedation and iv sedation. Most patients having dental treatment for the removal of wisdom teeth and the placement of dental implants usually select oral sedation or iv sedation. The iv sedation offered at Comfort Dental is administered by Dr. Leo Patron. Dr. Patron is a seasoned anesthesiologist. Some patients having treatment as minor as cosmetic tooth whitening may still decide on sedation. At Comfort Dental, its YOUR choice!
